Beaucerons is considered a herding and a watchdog. This breed of dog is said to have originated in ancient France. The Beaucerons were bred for the purpose of taking care of the sheep and as watchdogs. These were also used for searching mines during the Second World War. These dogs are very energetic, proud, loyal, noble and friendly. Beaucerons is also known as Beauce Sheep Dog, Red-Stocking, Bas Rouge and Berger de Beauce.

Physical Characteristics
The beauceron sometimes resembles a German shepherd. This is a large sized dog. Its average height is about 24 to 27.5 inches. It weighs around 36 to 45.5 kilograms. The female beauceron is a little smaller as compared to its male counterpart. The beauceron has strong and muscular body and scissor teeth. The beauceron only comes in black or tan color, though a grey black variation is also present but it is not considered a true beauceron then. The hind legs of this dog are quite distinctive having six toes on each foot.

Nature of Breed
This dog is very intelligent and is found to be a very good herding dog. A beauceron is a very self confident, proud and brave dog. It has very strong leadership qualities. They are not very ideal for urban conditions, and are best suitable for rural or suburban areas having ample space for activates of this dog. The Beauceron can be an excellent companion and guardian if it is handled and treated with care and good training. Otherwise it can become aggressive and dangerous. It does not like being teased or harmed.
