The Belgian Sheepdogs is recognized as a herding dog by most of the kennel clubs. This dog was bred in Belgium in 1800. The Belgian Sheepdog is also known by the names of Belgian Shepherd, Belgian Groenendael, and Chien de Berger Belge. This dog is known to be used as a herding dog in villages and as a search and police dog and also as a military dog. Average lifespan of Belgian sheepdog is 10 to 12 years.

Physical Characteristics
The Belgian Sheepdogs is a large dog. The height of a male Belgian Sheepdog is around 24 to 26 inches and that of a female is 22 to 24 inches. A healthy male weighs around 29 to 34 kilograms and weight of a female is 27 to 32 kilograms. This dog has a very strong and muscular neck which is not very long. The muzzle is quite long. The head has a well defined shape and the ears of Belgian sheepdog are triangular in shape and are always pointed upwards. This dog has very strong and muscular body specially the neck, legs and chest. It has a long tail which is slightly curved. The Belgian sheepdog is mainly black in colour; sometimes having white spots on somebody parts.

Nature of Breed
The Belgian Sheepdog is a very intelligent, protective and has a very gentle nature. It is a very obedient dog. It can take very good care of sheep. It needs proper training since childhood otherwise it can become shy and sometimes aggressive in nature. It bonds with the family and the kids very well. We can say that the Belgian sheepdog is a very good herding or watchdog.
