The Bernese mountain dog belongs to the Mastiff or working dog group. It is one of the earliest breed known. The origin of this dog dates back to mid seventeenth century. The Bernese mountain dog was bred in Switzerland. This breed is also known as Berner Sennenhund, Bouvier Bernois, Bovaro Bernese, and Duerrbaechler. This dog has a very short lifespan, on average the Bernese mountain dog lives for only 6 to 8 years.

Physical Characteristics
The Bernese mountain dog is a very large dog. The average height of a male Bernese mountain dog is 24-28 and that of a female is around 23- 27 inches. The male weighs around 38-50 kilograms and the female weighs 36-48 kilograms. This dog is a tricolored dog and comes into two combinations; one is the Black/Tan/White and the other Black/Rust/White. It has very long hair. The tail is white in colour. It has a shiny and a thick coat.
Nature of Breed
The Bernese mountain dog is a very loyal and kind natured dog. It proves to be the best companion for the whole family. It can bond very well to the humans as well as any kind of pets in the house. Another feature of this dog is that it is very lazy dog, and can only be energetic for short periods of time. It likes to be with the family and tries to make the whole family very happy. Also it needs company very much otherwise it can become sad and unhappy.
