The Black and Tan Coonhound is considered to be a terrier by some clubs and a hound by many others. It is a working dog. Its origins date back to 1700. It was bred in America at that time for the purpose of hunting and chasing the game. The other names of the Black and Tan Coonhound are Coon Hound, Coon Dog, and Coon Dawg. The average lifespan of this dog is about 10 to 12 years.

Physical Features
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large dog. The average height of a male coonhound is about 25 to 27 inches and that of a female is 23 to 25 inches. The male and female has almost equal weights, and both weigh around 22 kilograms to 34 kilograms. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short and dense coat. It requires a little brushing and a good diet to keep its hair smooth and healthy. This dog comes only in Black or Tan colours.

Nature and Temperament
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a cool and people friendly in nature. This dog needs lot of exercise and large area for activities. If it is confined to small living space a number of behavioral problems occur. The Black and Tan Coonhounds bond well with the humans as well as other pets. They do not show aggressiveness. It is a very sensitive and gentle breed. It is a very good hunting dog which follows the prey by its scent.
