The Bloodhound belongs to the hound group. This breed is known to be in existence since 1000 AD and was developed in the 8t century in Belgium. The bloodhound was used for mainly hunting purposes, like tracking wolves, large cats etc. and following the trail of wild game. The other names of the Bloodhounds are Chien de Saint-Hubert, St. Hubert Hound, Flemish Hound, The Bloody, Bloodies, Bluthund and Bladhound. The average life span of this breed is 10 to 12 years.

Physical Characteristics
The bloodhound is a quite a large breed of dog. The average height of a male is about 25 to 27 inches and that of a female is 23 to 25 inches. The male weighs around 40 to 50 kilos and the female weighs around 36 to 45kilos. The eyes of the bloodhound are hazel to a deep yellow in colour. The skull is narrow and long. The ears of are very soft, thin and are folded. The skin colour of this dog varies from black and tan, liver and tan and red. Sometimes white colour is also present on some parts of the body. The hair is short.

Nature of Breed
The bloodhounds are very lovable and patient dogs. It is very good natured and bond very well to the human specially the kids. The bloodhound is possessive about its stuff at times. It might show a little aggressiveness with dogs of same sex but otherwise they are very calm and composed.. They can also be shy or sensitive in nature depending upon the training.
