The Briard belongs to the herding dog group. The origin of the Briards dates back to several centuries. It was bred in France. It was used as a sheep herding dog at first and also as a messenger by the France army. The Briard is also known with the name of Berger de Brie, a heart wrapped in fur, Chien de Brie, Chien d’Aubry. The average life span of the Briard is around 10 to 12 years.

Physical Characteristics
The Briard is a large animal. It is a strong and muscular dog. Especially the legs are very powerful. The chest is very muscular. The muzzle is quite wide. The ears of this dog are set high on the head. The average height of healthy male Briard is about 24 to27 inches. And that of a female is 22 to 25 inches. A healthy male weighs around 75 pounds. The female is also as heavy as the male is. It has long hair and its coat is very coarse and strong. But the undercoat is very soft and fine. It has beard, moustaches and heavy eyelashes.
Nature of Breed
The Briard is a very loyal and protective natured. It is very loving and it loves to be with the family and the children. It is very intelligent. The temperament of this dog depends upon the training given to it. If not trained properly at the early age the Briard can become non friendly, aggressive and independent, otherwise it is very warm and friendly in nature. It can be a very good watchdog due to its protective nature.
