Breed Description
The Curly-Coated Retriever is considered to be one of the oldest retriever breeds. This breed is used for retrieving as early as the 18th century in England. This breed is developed by crossing the Close-Curled English Water Dog, Old Water Spaniel, St. John’s Newfoundland Dog, the Labrador and the Poodle. This breed is an excellent water retriever.

Physical Characteristics
The Curly-Coated Retriever is a large, hardy and athletic breed. This breed is also known as Curlies and CCR. The Curly-Coated Retriever has life span between 9 to 14 years. The male breed weighs (36-45 kg) with the height of (63-68 cm). The female breed weighs (29-38 kg) with the height of (58- 63 cm). The female breed gives birth to 8 puppies. The Curly-Coated Retriever is belonging to Gundog and Sporting group. The only acceptable colors of the Curly-Coated Retriever are pure black or pure liver. This breed has short hair with moderate shade. This breed has a tight curly coat which will protect them from debris and injuries when they are out in the brush. This breed is good with only large fenced yard.

Nature of Breed
The Curly-Coated Retriever is a very happy, energetic, and easy going breed. This breed is easily trainable, because they are historically hunting and gun dogs. Only thing to be aware with this breed is that they are late bloomers. This breed gets fully matured only at 3 years of age. The Curly-Coated Retriever is extremely loyal and shows more affection to the family. This breed is recommended to use as watch dogs, because it is so mischievous in nature. Due to their nature as watchdogs and their desire to protect the family, it is important that they are socialized at a young age so that they know the difference between threats and daily happenings. The Curly-Coated Retriever is definitely not a dog for everyone, but will make excellent pets and companions for the right individual or family.
