Breed Description
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is originated in the Swiss Alps’ farms and villages. This breed is considered to be the largest of the four Sennenhund Breeds. The other three are Appenzell Cattle Dog, Entlebuch Cattle Dog, and the Bernice mountain dog .This breed is developed more than 2000 years ago. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has also contributed to the origin of the Saint Bernard. This breed is also known as the poor man’s horse, because of it’s a natural ability for drafting.

Physical Characteristics
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has very powerful striking and strong appearance. This breed is also known as Grosser Schweitzer Sennenhund, Large Swiss Mountain Dog, Swissie, GSMD, Great Swiss Cattle Dog and “poor man’s horse”. The GSMD has life span of 10-12 years. This breed is belonging to working dog and mastiff group. The male breed weighs (47-63 kg) with the height of (64-72 cm). The female breed weighs (38-49 kg) with the height of (59-68 cm). The female breed gives birth to 4-8 puppies. This extra large sized breed has medium sized hair with moderate shade. The GSMD appears in black, white and rust color. This breed is well in apartment size to large yard size.
Nature of Breed
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is very loyal and protective in nature without being aggressive.This breed is used as excellent watchdogs because of their courage and loyalty. This breed has ability to involve in the family as much as possible. Socialization is very important as puppies because this breed need to learn l the difference between good guys and bad guys. The GSMD is get fully matured only after two or three years of age. This breed is an excellent choice for a family with other animals or dogs because of its easy going nature with other animals.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is good to be an excellent watch dog.
