This breed belongs to the Spaniel group. The Irish Water Spaniel originated in old Ireland. Its origins date back to the mid 1800. It was mainly used as a hunting and retrieving dog. The average life span of an Irish Water Spaniel is around 10 to 12 years. It is also known with the names IWS, Whiptail, Rat Tail Spaniel, Bog Dog and Shannon Tail.

Physical Features
The Irish Water Spaniel is a large dog. A healthy male stands 20 -24 inches tall and a female 19 to 23 inches tall. An Irish Water Spaniel has a weight of 45 to 65 pounds. Both the male and female weigh the same. This dog has a very close resemblance to the poodle. It has long hair. The Irish Water Spaniel comes into puce, dark brown or liver color. Its ears are covered with thick hair and the back of legs and the tail is covered with straight short hair.
Nature and Temperament
The Irish Water Spaniel is a very intelligent dog. It is very active and it likes to play a lot. It can be a great watch dog or guard dog. It is shy with strangers so they can be trained to be wary of strangers and tell if a stranger comes. It can be a family dog if it is trained in a good manner. Otherwise it can be non obedient sometimes. The Irish Water Spaniel is quiet and calm dog and not aggressive at all. If properly socialized it bond well with other pets also.
