The Laekenois belongs to the herding group. This breed of dogs was bred in Belgium. The Laekenois was used as a herding dog, but these days it is used as a police or military dog. The Laekenois is also known by the names of Belgian Laekenois, Chien de Berger, Laekense, and Belgian Shepherd. The average life span of this breed is 12 to 14 years.

Physical Characteristics
The Laekenois is a large dog. The average height of a male Laekenois is around 24 to 26 inches. The female is relatively smaller and is around 22 to 24 inches high. The male Laekenois weighs around 24 to 29 kilograms and the female also weighs the same. The skull of a Laekenois is flat. The nose is always black in colour. It has a muscular body. Its legs are very strong. Its coat is very harsh. The Laekenois is basically mahogany or fawn coloured, but brown or white can also be seen.
Nature of Breed
The Laekenois is a very active and intelligent animal. It proves to be a very good watch dog as it has a natural tendency to watch the flock. They can be very good pets at home if they are socialized from early age. The Laekenois is not a family dog as it bonds with only one or two people at home. If they are not properly trained from early age it can cause problems as a pet. It can even hurt young children. It does not live easy with non canine and smaller pets as it may end up chasing them around the house.
