The Otterhound belongs to the hound group. The origins of this breed date back to colonial era. They were mainly bred to control the population of the otters by fishermen. They were also used by the kings of England that time for their leisure. They were used as hunting dogs by them. The Otterhound is also called an Otter. The average lifespan of an Otterhound is about 10 to 12 years.
Physical Features
The Otterhound is a large dog. The male and female are of same size and weigh almost the same. The Otterhound is 24 inches to 26 inches in height. A healthy Otterhound weighs around 32 to 52 kilograms. The Otterhound has a large and wide head. It has a shaggy face and appearance. It has large eyebrows. The neck of this animal is very muscular and strong. The tail is mostly downwards but when the dog is anxious it rises upwards. It has a huge rough and bushy coat. The Otterhounds are Black, Brown, Tan, Sable, Black Markings and Grizzle coloured.
Nature and Temperament
The Otterhound is a very friendly dog. It bonds very well with the family and kids. It also does well with other pets. Due to its friendly nature it also comes close to strangers. Thus it is naturally a great companion. It loves to be around family and kids. It is a very cheerful and happy natured. The Otterhound is bold. They are very calm in nature and do not bark too much.
They are good if used as watch dogs but they are not make very good guard dogs.
