The Papillons are recognized as lapdog or a companion dog by most of the kennel clubs. They belong to the toy group. The origins of this breed date back to Dark Age. The Papillon is also known as Butterfly dog, Phalenes and Squirrel Dog. The average lifespan of a Papillon is about 12 to 16 years, which depends upon the conditions and lifestyle.

Physical Features
The Papillon is a very small animal. The male and female are of same size and weigh almost the same. The Papillon is 8 inches to 11 inches in height. A healthy Papillon weighs around 7 to 10 pounds. It has large ears which are sometimes in the shape of a butterfly’s wings. In some cases the ears drop downwards. It has a long bushy tail which is held downwards and slightly curved. The coat of this animal is very smooth and silky. The Papillon is white in colour having patches of other colours on the body.

Nature and Temperament
The Papillon is a very brave, courageous and obedient dog. It does not like sitting idly and doing nothing. It can hunt down butterflies, moths and small rodents like the mice. They are very calm in nature and are quite watchful of their surroundings. Also they are very playful, and like to play a lot. They get along very well with other pets and children. They are very loyal to the human, and follow the orders given to it. The Papillon is a happy go lucky pet which has a very sweet, loving and affectionate personality.
