The Pointers breed is recognized as sporting dog or a gun dog. The origins of this breed are thought to be in sixteenth century. they originated in England. The Pointers were bred for hunting purpose. The average lifespan of a Pointer is about 12 to 14 years and can be 16 years or more also. The Pointer is also known as English Pointer or a Bird dog.

Physical Features
The Pointer is a large sized dog. The average height of a male Pointer is 25 inches to 28 inches; and that of a female is around 23 to 26 inches. A healthy male Pointer weighs around 25 to 34 kilograms. The weight of a female is around 20 to 30 kilograms. The pointer has a large head and wide nose. It has a short and dense coat. The hair is of medium length. The pointers can be of any color found. The nose color varies according to the skin color. If the skin is dark then the nose is also dark colored and if the skin is light colored then the nose is light shaded.
Nature and Temperament
The Pointer is a very friendly and loyal family dog. It is very gentle and affectionate. It loves to be with the family. It is very playful and does not mind being teased by the kids. If it remains away from the family or is left alone it becomes anxious and stressed. The pointers are active dogs and need regular exercise; otherwise they tend to become destructive in nature.
