Breed Description:
The Rhodesian Ridgeback breed belongs to the hound group. It is usually of black, blue and fawn color. This breed has a life span of 9-15 years and an average of 12 years. Their litter size is up to 7 to 8 puppies. They have an extra large size and short hair length. This breed needs an active life they are excellent outdoor dogs. Rhodesian Ridgeback are very muscular and strong built and are also very athletic. These are very handsome and upstanding dogs. They are capable of extreme endurance and speed. Ridge on its back is one of the unique feature of this breed. Also these dogs are always alert. They are not only the hunters but a good family protector. They are trustworthy, affectionate companion for young and adults both.

Breed History:
Rhodesian Ridgeback breed was developed from Southern Africa in Rhodesia as a special breed to keep the lion at bay or just harass it so that the hunters can kill the lion. In 1922 it was the first time taht this breed was written as per standards,with its parent breed company formed by Francis R. Barnes in Bulawayo.

Nature of Breed:
These dogs are versatile hunters but beyond this these are extremely protective guard dog. They love the family and love to play with young children. They are tough and strong enough to hunt lions while guarding homes and settlements. They can easily survive in cold or heat. They are strong-willed and powerful dogs having sharp eyesight. They are very active and fun-loving, independent in nature yet intelligent enough for most people to work with.
